WILD BLUE

August 6, 2011 - I walked into town around 7am to get a new storage card for my camera.  Walking up the hill back to our house, a single leaf caught my eye.  Can you imagine what I saw in it?

I saw an imprint, shaped like the head of an owl, with feathered ear tufts.  Did you know that an owl's sense of hearing is even more impressive than its vision?  Not only my owl character need wings, she also needed ear tufts to signify her keen sense of listening.  It was almost time to return to the drawing board... almost...

At 8am, Dean and I had to go pick up our son from camp up in Massachusetts.  As we got onto the highway, I noticed heaven's magnificent blue canvas of the sky, and took a picture of a small piece of it.

Clearly this was a better backdrop of my twitter image.

Later that evening, while sipping on a some Wild Blue for inspiration,  I sat and sketched out several ideas.  I looked at the Wild Blue label.

I had bought the Wild Blue the day before on a whim.  The unusual label caught my attention, becuase my father once wore a royal blue jersey and played ball for the Yale Bulldogs.  He played first string all four years of college, both as full-back and right half-back.  He knew how to run a ball and is still fondly remembered as Ferdinand the Bull

Getting back to the task at hand, I chose my favorite sketch, traced it in black marker, scanned the image into the computer, and started to add some color.  Now, my owl is ready fly.  We have an official pair of wings.

Now, for some reason this picture made me think of the song lyrics: Off we go into the wild blue yonder, Climbing high into the sun... That's the official song of the United States Airforce... Then I realized, this is it, my flying snitch is embarking on a secret mission.

In my mind I imagined her soaring higher and higher into the sky, as a tavern full of Top Gun officers, raise bottles of Wild Blue, in a toast and sing the verse...

Here's a toast to the host
Of those who love the vastness of the sky,
To a friend we send a message of his brother men who fly.
We drink to those who gave their all of old,
Then down we roar to score the rainbow's pot of gold.
A toast to the host of men we boast, the U.S. Air Force!

Suddenly our fearless leader turns and starts back down, dive bombing out of the sky and darting into the woods, where she disappears. WITWIT - Where In The World Is TrailLeader?  I have no idea... Let's go find out!
